Fitness App Development Cost: What Drives the Price
Fitness app development cost in 2026 by app type, with hours at three rate levels, the features that raise the price, content and running costs.
Full-Stack, Mobile & AI Engineer
Ask five developers what a fitness app costs and you can get five answers between $10,000 and $300,000. They aren't necessarily wrong. A workout logger, a guided video program, a booking app for one studio and a platform that runs dozens of gyms are all "fitness apps", and they differ by thousands of hours.
This guide breaks down fitness app development cost by the kind of app you're building, using the same formula I use for any estimate (hours times rate). Then it shows which features move the price most, what you'll pay after launch, and where you can save without building something worse. The numbers are planning ranges, not quotes, informed by scoping two very different fitness products I built: MOVE, a workout and wellness app with 100K+ active users, and Floey, a class booking and gym management platform in Kuwait.
Key takeaways
- Cost = hours × rate. The type of app decides the hours; who builds it decides the rate.
- A focused tracker or guided workout MVP is about 300 to 600 hours, roughly $7,500 to $60,000 depending on rate.
- Coaching apps and multi-gym platforms run to 800 to 3,000+ hours, because they're several products sharing one backend.
- The big cost drivers are video delivery, offline sync, booking rules, multi-country payments, wearables and tools for staff.
- Content often costs more than code for guided workout apps: filming, editing, coaches and music licensing.
- After launch, budget for store commission on digital subscriptions, video delivery, services and 15 to 20% a year in maintenance.
Fitness app development cost by type
Here are six common kinds of fitness product, priced at three hourly rates:
| App type | What it includes | Hours | At $25/hr | At $50/hr | At $100/hr |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Workout tracker or logger | Exercise library, logging, history, charts, sync | 300 to 500 | $7.5k to $12.5k | $15k to $25k | $30k to $50k |
| Guided program app (video or audio) | Programs, player, downloads, streaks, subscriptions | 400 to 600 | $10k to $15k | $20k to $30k | $40k to $60k |
| Single-studio booking app | Schedule, booking, payments, reminders, staff dashboard | 400 to 600 | $10k to $15k | $20k to $30k | $40k to $60k |
| Coaching app | Coach and client apps, plans, check-ins, chat, payments | 800 to 1,400 | $20k to $35k | $40k to $70k | $80k to $140k |
| Connected hardware app | Bluetooth pairing, live data, sync, charts | 800 to 1,500+ | $20k to $37.5k+ | $40k to $75k+ | $80k to $150k+ |
| Multi-gym booking platform | Marketplace, business app, multi-tenant backend, payouts | 1,800 to 3,000+ | $45k to $75k+ | $90k to $150k+ | $180k to $300k+ |
Rates in 2026 run from about $15 to $20 an hour (typical Upwork rates for developers in India) to $60 to $100+ an hour through vetted networks such as Arc, and more at US agencies. A low rate doesn't guarantee a low total, so compare totals for the same scope.
What drives the price
The type sets the baseline. These features move it, and each one is worth naming explicitly in any quote you receive:
| Feature | Typical added hours | Why it costs what it does |
|---|---|---|
| Video with adaptive streaming and downloads | 60 to 150 | Transcoding, CDN setup, offline storage, player edge cases |
| Offline-first logging and sync | 80 to 200 | Local database, sync queue, conflict rules, testing on bad networks |
| Apple Health and Health Connect | 40 to 100 | Two platforms, permissions, review requirements, privacy rules |
| Subscriptions, trials and paywalls | 40 to 80 | Store products, entitlements, receipts, web billing |
| Booking rules (capacity, waitlists, cancellations, packs) | 100 to 250 | Concurrency, money and fairness all meet here |
| Each extra country's payment method | 40 to 120 | Local methods such as KNET, refunds, webhooks, reconciliation |
| Wearables or Bluetooth devices | 150 to 400+ | Pairing, reconnects, firmware quirks, real-device testing |
| Staff or business app | 200 to 600 | A second product with its own roles and workflows |
| Content management tools | 60 to 200 | Uploading, tagging and scheduling programs without a developer |
| Social features (feeds, challenges, leaderboards) | 100 to 300 | Moderation, notifications, cheating prevention |
Two of these deserve a warning. Booking rules look like a few database tables until two people book the last spot at the same moment. And a staff app is never "just an admin panel": gym owners need schedules, instructors, memberships and check-in to work as smoothly as the member app does, often on a front-desk tablet with a queue of people waiting.
A worked example: a guided workout MVP
Say you want an app with one 8-week program, a video player, streaks and a subscription with a free trial. Here's how the hours break down:
| Line item | Hours |
|---|---|
| Discovery, flows and UI design | 50 |
| Onboarding with goals and schedule | 30 |
| Program and "today" screens | 60 |
| Video player with HLS streaming and downloads | 80 |
| History, streaks and progress | 50 |
| Subscriptions with RevenueCat and a paywall | 50 |
| Reminders at the user's chosen times | 20 |
| Backend: users, programs, logs, entitlements | 80 |
| Content admin for uploading programs | 30 |
| QA on real iOS and Android devices | 50 |
| Release: store setup, builds, review | 20 |
| Project management and demos | 30 |
| Total | 550 |
That's $13,750 at $25 an hour, $27,500 at $50 and $55,000 at $100, before a single session is filmed. Add Apple Health and Health Connect, offline-first logging and web billing, and you're into v1 territory at 800 to 1,200 hours.
Where multi-gym platforms get expensive
A platform for many gyms isn't one app with more screens. It's three products:
- A member app to discover gyms, book classes, pay and check in.
- A business app for owners and staff: schedules, capacity, instructors, memberships, check-in, coupons and payouts.
- A multi-tenant backend where each gym's data, staff and settings are isolated, with billing and reporting per gym.
From the field: Floey's scope included a consumer app on iOS, Android and the web, Floey Business for owners and staff, and a multi-tenant Django REST Framework backend on PostgreSQL and Redis. Payments covered KNET, Apple Pay, Google Pay and cards with automatic monthly renewals, and the business side handled recurring schedules, capacity, instructor swaps, memberships, class packs, check-in, no-shows, coupons and payouts. MOVE centred on something else entirely: offline-first sync, streaks, progress and a 500+ day video library with adaptive playback. Both are fitness apps, with very different budgets.
Costs outside the build
| Cost | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Content production | Filming, editing, coaches and music licensing; for guided apps, often the largest line |
| Video hosting and delivery | Storage, transcoding and CDN bandwidth, growing with every minute watched |
| Store accounts | Apple Developer Program $99 a year; Google Play $25 once |
| Store commission on digital subscriptions | Apple: 30%, or 15% for Small Business Program members and after a subscriber's first year. Google Play: 15% on subscriptions |
| Payment processing for bookings | Card and local method fees from your provider, since in-person services don't use in-app purchase |
| Subscription tooling | RevenueCat is free up to $2,500 in monthly tracked revenue, then 1% |
| Maintenance | About 15 to 20% of the build cost per year |
The commission line catches founders out. A $10 monthly subscription sold through the App Store by a Small Business Program member earns about $8.50, and less in countries where the price includes VAT. Model it in your pricing from the start.
How long it takes
| App type | Typical timeline |
|---|---|
| Tracker or guided workout MVP | 8 to 14 weeks |
| Single-studio booking app | 10 to 14 weeks |
| Coaching app | 4 to 6 months |
| Multi-gym platform | 6 to 9+ months |
Timelines depend as much on decisions as on code: content readiness, payment provider approval and store review all sit on the critical path.
How to spend less without building something worse
- Start with one studio or one program. Prove people book or train before building a marketplace or a content library.
- Use managed services. Expo for builds and updates, a managed video platform, RevenueCat for subscriptions and hosted auth remove weeks of work.
- Film less, better. Ten excellent sessions in a clear program beat 200 average ones.
- Ship the staff tools that remove manual work first, such as check-in and schedule changes, and leave reporting dashboards for later.
- Use one codebase. React Native covers iOS and Android and, for booking flows, often the web as well.
Fitness app development cost in India, and with AI features
At the typical Upwork rates for React Native developers in India, about $15 to $20 an hour, a tracker or guided-workout MVP of 300 to 600 hours comes to roughly $4,500 to $12,000; senior engineers and agencies charge more. AI features change the estimate depending on the type. Generating plans or summaries with a language model is a modest addition, mostly prompt design, guardrails and cost limits. Real-time form feedback from the camera is a different project: pose estimation on the device, model tuning and testing across body types and lighting, often adding hundreds of hours.
FAQ
How much does it cost to build a fitness app?
A focused workout tracker or guided program MVP typically takes 300 to 600 hours, roughly $7,500 to $60,000 depending on the developer's rate. Coaching apps run 800 to 1,400 hours, and a multi-gym booking platform with a business app and multi-tenant backend is usually 1,800 to 3,000+ hours.
How long does it take to build a fitness app?
A focused MVP takes about 8 to 14 weeks. Coaching apps take four to six months, and a platform serving many gyms takes six months or more. Content production, payment provider approvals and store review often decide the launch date as much as development does.
What are the ongoing costs of a fitness app?
Store commission on digital subscriptions, video hosting and delivery, payment processing for bookings, third-party services such as subscriptions and analytics, store account fees, and maintenance of about 15 to 20% of the build cost each year. Guided apps also pay for new content.
Should a gym use white-label software instead of a custom app?
Often, yes, at the start. White-label gym software gets a single gym a branded booking app quickly for a monthly fee. A custom build makes sense when your booking rules, payment methods or member experience are the product, or when you're building a platform for many gyms.
