Hiring a React Native Developer in India: Rates, Time Zones, What Works
What it really costs to hire a React Native developer in India in 2026, how time zones work with the US, UK and Gulf, and how to avoid the usual mistakes.
Full-Stack, Mobile & AI Engineer
India has one of the largest pools of React Native developers in the world, and hiring there can stretch a budget a long way. It can also go badly: cheap quotes that become expensive rewrites, days lost to time zones, and code nobody else can maintain.
I'm a React Native developer based in Mumbai, and since 2021 I've worked remotely with founders and product teams in the US, UK, Europe, the Middle East, Singapore and Australia. This guide covers what to expect when you hire a React Native developer in India: realistic rates, how the time zones actually work, how payment and contracts work, and how to make it go well.
Key takeaways
- Rates vary a lot. Typical Upwork rates for React Native developers in India are about $15 to $20 an hour (listed range roughly $6 to $25). Agencies commonly advertise from about $25 to $35. Senior independent developers charge more.
- India is UTC+5:30 with no daylight saving. That gives easy overlap with the Gulf, Singapore and the UK, and a short daily overlap with the US East Coast.
- Make async work the default: written updates, recorded demos and a shared task list, with one or two calls a week in the overlap window.
- Own everything: your code repository, your Apple and Google developer accounts, your cloud accounts.
- Don't hire on price alone. The cheapest hourly rate is often the most expensive project once rework is counted.
What React Native developers in India charge
| Profile | Typical hourly rate (USD) | What you usually get |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace freelancer | About $15 to $20 (Upwork's typical range) | Wide quality range; you manage everything |
| Agency developer | Commonly advertised from about $25 to $35 | A team, a project manager, more process |
| Senior independent developer | Roughly $35 to $60+ | Owns app, backend and release; direct communication |
| Vetted network (any country) | About $60 to $100+ (Arc) | Pre-screened, global pricing |
For comparison, a salaried React Native developer in the US costs about $62 an hour in salary alone, before benefits and overhead, according to ZipRecruiter's August 2026 data. That gap is the reason so many companies hire in India. It's also why experienced developers in India often price closer to global rates than to marketplace averages.
How the time zones actually work
India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year. Here's how a typical Indian working day (around 10:00 to 19:00 IST) overlaps with your office hours:
| Your location | Difference from India | Natural overlap (your local time) |
|---|---|---|
| Kuwait, Saudi Arabia (UTC+3) | India is 2.5 hours ahead | Most of your working day |
| UAE (UTC+4) | India is 1.5 hours ahead | Most of your working day |
| Singapore (UTC+8) | India is 2.5 hours behind | Your afternoon |
| UK (summer, UTC+1) | India is 4.5 hours ahead | Your morning to early afternoon |
| US East Coast (summer, UTC−4) | India is 9.5 hours ahead | Your early morning, roughly 8:00 to 9:30 (more if your developer works late) |
| US West Coast (summer, UTC−7) | India is 12.5 hours ahead | Little natural overlap; plan a fixed call |
| Sydney (UTC+10 or +11) | India is 4.5 to 5.5 hours behind | Your afternoon |
For US clients, the time difference can be an advantage: you review work in your morning, give feedback, and find it addressed the next day. It works when feedback is written and specific.
Making remote work go well
- Agree a rhythm. For example: a written update every day or two, a build on your phone every week, and one call a week in the overlap window.
- Write things down. Decisions in a shared doc or tracker, not only in calls.
- Show, don't describe. Screen recordings and TestFlight or internal-testing builds remove most misunderstandings.
- Plan around holidays. Diwali and other national holidays can take a few days out of the calendar in autumn. Ask about them up front.
- Keep one owner per area. If you hire several people, name who owns the app, the backend and the release.
Payments, invoices and taxes
Most Indian freelancers invoice in US dollars, euros or pounds and receive payment by bank transfer or through services like Wise, Payoneer or a marketplace. A few practical notes:
- Ask for a proper invoice with the developer's legal name, address and tax details.
- Indian freelancers exporting services usually invoice without Indian GST when they've filed the required Letter of Undertaking. That's their compliance to handle, but a clean invoice tells you they're set up properly.
- Your own tax treatment (withholding, reporting) depends on your country. Ask your accountant once, then it's routine.
Contracts and ownership
Whoever you hire, the contract should cover:
- Intellectual property assigned to your company on payment.
- Code pushed to your repository from day one, not delivered at the end.
- The app published under your Apple and Google developer accounts.
- Milestones with a clear definition of "done", and payment tied to them.
- Confidentiality, a support period after launch, and how the agreement ends.
Mistakes that make outsourcing to India fail
- Choosing the lowest quote. A team at $12 an hour that takes three times as long, and leaves code you must rewrite, isn't cheap.
- No overlap plan. If nobody can answer questions for a day, work stalls.
- Vague scope. "Build an app like Uber" gets you an estimate that means nothing.
- Developer-owned accounts. If the app sits under someone else's developer account, moving it later is painful.
- No real-device testing until the end. Ask for weekly builds from the start.
From the field: I work from Mumbai with clients from the US to Kuwait to Australia, and I've shipped 50+ apps to the stores. What makes remote work smooth isn't the time zone itself. It's clear ownership, written decisions and a build on the client's phone every week.
Hiring React developers for the web side too
Many products need a web app or admin dashboard alongside the mobile app. React (web) developers in India are an even larger pool than React Native specialists, and many engineers work across both. If you want one person or team to cover web and mobile, ask to see shipped work on each, because mobile adds release processes, device testing and native modules that web-only experience doesn't cover.
FAQ
How much does it cost to hire a React Native developer in India?
Typical Upwork rates for React Native developers in India are about $15 to $20 an hour, with agency rates commonly from $25 to $35 and senior independent developers higher. For a focused MVP of 300 to 500 hours, that's roughly $5,000 to $25,000 depending on who you hire.
Is it safe to hire a freelance developer from India?
It's as safe as hiring anywhere, if you set it up properly: check live apps and references, run a short paid trial, keep code and developer accounts in your name, and pay against milestones. Most problems come from missing contracts and ownership, not geography.
How do I manage the time difference with a developer in India?
Make written, async communication the default, and use the daily overlap window for one or two calls a week. For US clients, the gap often helps: feedback sent in your afternoon is handled by your next morning.
Do I have to pay Indian taxes when hiring an Indian freelancer?
Generally the freelancer handles their own Indian taxes, and exported services are usually invoiced without Indian GST. Your own obligations depend on your country's rules, so check once with your accountant.
